I'm an experienced mechanic now in another part of the auto industry and i do take my car in occasionally for oil changes, but bring in my own oil and filter. Sometimes it's worth it to pay someone $25 to get dirty and dispose of the oil without me needing to clean the driveway. Even if you put cardboard down invariably one drop manages to spill anyways
Frequently, people who live in apartments aren't allowed to change their oil in the parking lot, or on the street. You also need space to store the tools to do the job (wrenches, ramps, jack, jack stands) and a convenient place to take the used oil to dispose of it. More trouble than it's worth for lots of people. If I didn't love wrenching on cars I'd pay someone else to do it.
Explaining that way makes sense. I've always known how to take care of a car, and changing oil is the basics. I lived in an apartment complex for several years and worked on my car in the garage without incident. Guess I just made an assumption. My apologies. =D
