I respect the 11-year-old. Jane Austen isn't just 'the most well known female author', she is the best. If it seems that a lot of modern stories (cough, Twilight, cough) follow her formula it's because she *made* the formula.
Yeah, I agree with basically everyone on here. There is nothing wrong first of all with Jane Austen, second, with an eleven year old who reads her work. I think that's awesome (s)he reads her work; reading at a young age is better than drinking in front of an eleven year old. I'd rather hang out with your cousin than you.
hmm... a more well-known female writer... J.K. Rowling perhaps? Beatrix Potter? Jodi Piccoult? Anne Rice? Austen may be a little dry and predictable, but her books are still well written. It's pretty impressive that your 11 year old cousin enjoys actual literature. Maybe you should put down the corona and pick up a book every once in awhile.
6:59 Yes, but given the time and context, most men WERE ignorant misogynistic swine. A good many women were vapid, because no "proper" gentleman wanted a free thinking wife. I mean, the purpose of social critique is to well, critique. Is Dickens any less of a writer for showing hypocrisy of London's middle and upper class?
I'm all about 11 year olds liking real literature. And frankly, what kind of idiot gets 5 corona's deep in front of an 11 year old? No one needs to deal with your immature illiterate hang ups. If you don't like what she's reading, buy her better books for Christmas, but by god, at least be thankful she's reading more than the brand names of lipstick.
9:21 I noted that most women at that time were vapid idiots. Perhaps misogyny is a bit strong for my statement but it was an extremely sexist society. We don't write of slavery as "a product of the times" we wonder where our ancestors got off on being such douches. Austen's work will live on as a critique of her time.
759 I agree the times were male dominated and Jane Austen's work are exactly what you claim them to be a critique. Personally I just don't like the pretentiousness of her works. She makes it seem like she is the only woman to ever have a free thought. I guess it is just a personal preference. Like I had I respect her work, I just dont like it
@9:11 yes, I did. The category was "well-known female authors". J.K. Rowling wrote some of the best contemporary children's literature of our age. Not to mention, she's outsold almost every author of this century. So I really couldn't give a shit whether or not you like her. But, I guarantee she is more well-known than Austen. Suck it.
4:53 Oh yeah, cause other celebrated authors didn't do the exact same thing with their own stories. When's the last time Hemingway wrote a realistic female character? Oh right. He didn't.
(Besides, I'd agree Kate Chopin is better then Jane Austen, but thats neither here nor there. The important thing is that the OP is a fucking loser)
711 I would consider the social constraints before ever making such a blantant claim of misogyny and ignorance by males. The truth is that societies evolve the way they do for a reason. Pretty sure England had several Queens when it was normally a patriarchial culture. It is just as easy to claim that the women of those times were shallow idiots that married based on rank and social status than it is love. Or show the point that none of them did shit to deter that idea( hence Austen's works).
ur fucked guy. you should be happy she even knows how to fucking read.
it makes me happy to know that there are 11 year olds out there in the year 2009 who read jane austen. the first time i read pride & prejudice i was 11 too.
612 What I am saying is that every "novel" she writes is predictable and pretentious. She writes as herself being the protagonist (which many authors do), but the character always is the smartest person in an overwhelmingly ignorant society. Basically she is saying that she is better than all women and men are ignorant misogynistic swine that are here to oppress women.
221 she isn't the most well known? Who is then? And if she is the best female author I feel bad for your gender. Same story: 1 women is the stereotypical whorish ditz, the other woman is the intelligent pretentious snob that quietly judges every other character. The men are boorish and controlling. Enter feminist drivel...
I haven't any right to criticise books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticise Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Everytime I read 'Pride and Prejudice' I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.
-A quote from Mark Twain on Jane Austen
there is a reason why women love it and guys hate it. Most women try to identify with the protagonist, basically giving them this feeling of superiority, while guys hate the manner in which they are portrayed and hear feminist bs.
746 did you seriously just put the author of Harry Potter in the same sentence as Jane Austen? Wow any point to which you were trying to make is now null and void. Austen was a great writer and is considered good literature. I hate her works, but I do have respect for her ability to write during her time period.
"hmm... a more well-known female writer... J.K. Rowling perhaps? Beatrix Potter? Jodi Piccoult? Anne Rice?"
How many them do think people will know in 100 years?
And everybody that praised the 11 year old for reading actual literature is right. At least she is not singing Justin Bieber or Jonas Brothers while reading Twilight. And anybody that likes Corona and gets drunk off of it is a chick. PAcifico is the best Mexican beer
1243 You have to be daft to honestly think the most celebrated female author of all time is not as well known as JK Rowling. I would bet anything that you ask the average person on the street the overwhelming majority would know who Jane Austen is....most would have no fucking idea of who JK Rowling is without looking it up....so I suggest you just shut up before you make yourself look any stupider.
Jane Austen has the same stupid plot in every one of her works. She is extremely overrated and prententious. The only reason we have to read her is because she is the most well known female author and the femi-nazis would have a fit
