Aside from visual effects, 'Avatar' also won art direction and best cinematography. So it's not like it came home empty handed like I believe 'Up in the Air' did which I thought was a great film. I haven't seen 'Avatar' yet, so I can't really comment on that film.
This actually made me feel a little bit better about Avatar losing. I'm not going to repeat how many times I've seen that movie, but I'll tell you it's a double digit number. O_o
Avatar did not deserve to win. It's all flashes and gimmicks, not even real acting either. I enjoyed the movie, it was entertaining, but not best picture worthy at all. It only would have won for effects anyways. However, I don't think The Hurt locker should have won best picture and direror either.
